Is There a Generic Wegovy?
Not in the US, and not for years. The FDA hasn't approved a generic version of Wegovy in any form, whether the weekly pen, the higher-dose Wegovy HD or the daily Wegovy pill.
Semaglutide is the generic name of Wegovy, not a generic copy. It's the same molecule Novo Nordisk sells as Ozempic for type 2 diabetes and as Rybelsus, a daily diabetes pill. All three are brand-name products from the same company.
Why a Wegovy Generic Can't Launch Before December 2031
One patent does most of the blocking. Novo Nordisk's compound patent on the semaglutide molecule runs until December 2031, and every generic Wegovy injection needs that same molecule. Other patents cover specific doses and uses, but the compound patent is the one no copy can design around.
The first company to test the patents was Mylan, now part of Viatris, which filed an application for generic Wegovy in December 2022. Novo sued, and later sued Sun Pharma over a second copy. Here's how it has played out.

Tentative approval means the FDA has reviewed a generic and found it acceptable, but the company can't sell it until the patents and exclusivities allow. Generic Semaglutide Is Sold Abroad. Why Not Here?
Patents are national, and they expire unevenly. Semaglutide's compound patent has already run out in several countries, including India and Canada, where generic versions are appearing in 2026. In the US it holds until December 2031.
Importing an overseas generic isn't a workaround. Bringing in unapproved injectable drugs for personal use is generally not allowed, and nobody in the US has checked the quality of those products.
The One Generic Weight-Loss GLP-1 You Can Buy Now
It exists, but it isn't semaglutide. In August 2025 Teva launched generic Saxenda, a copy of liraglutide 3 mg and the first generic GLP-1 approved for weight loss. It's a real, FDA-approved generic.
The trade-offs are real, though. Liraglutide is a daily injection rather than a weekly one, and it's weaker: about 8% average weight loss at 56 weeks in its main trial, against about 15% at 68 weeks for Wegovy in the STEP 1 trial. Prices vary widely by pharmacy, so compare a discount-card price before you fill it.

Compounded semaglutide is the option most often sold as generic Wegovy, and it isn't one. A licensed pharmacy makes it for an individual prescription, using the same active ingredient but without FDA approval of the finished product. Since the FDA declared the semaglutide shortage over in February 2025, compounders may only make it when a prescriber has a clinical reason the brand won't do, such as a custom dose. Novo Nordisk has also sued telehealth companies over compounded and copycat semaglutide.
Red Flags: Fake “Generic Wegovy” Offers
Anything sold as generic Wegovy is mislabeled. No such product has been approved, so the label alone tells you the seller is cutting corners. Watch for:
- Pens that look like Wegovy but cost a fraction of the price. The FDA has warned about counterfeit semaglutide pens found in the US supply chain.
- Semaglutide sodium or semaglutide acetate on the label. The FDA has warned that these salt forms aren't the same active ingredient as the one in Wegovy.
- No prescription and no pharmacy you can look up. Brand and compounded semaglutide both need a prescription and a licensed US pharmacy.
- “Generic” in the product name. Real compounded products are labeled as compounded semaglutide, never as a generic.
Is there a generic Wegovy?
No. There is no FDA-approved generic Wegovy in the US, in pen, HD or pill form. Novo Nordisk's core semaglutide patent blocks a generic injection until at least December 2031.
